Erigeron k. 'Wayne Roderick' | Mexican fleabane

If you’re after a perennial that quietly earns its place year after year, Erigeron x ‘Wayne Roderick’ might just be the perfect fit. We fell for its delicate lavender-blue daisies with sunny yellow centres the moment we spotted it, and it hasn’t disappointed since. Flowering generously from May right through to October, it’s a wonderfully reliable source of soft summer colour.

Forming neat mounds around 30-45 cm high and spreading up to 60 cm, it works beautifully at the front of sunny borders, in gravel gardens, tucked into rockeries, or spilling over the edges of paths and containers. Those wiry stems topped with dainty flowers seem to dance above the foliage, adding a gentle, naturalistic feel wherever it grows.

But it’s not just pretty; it’s tough, too. Wayne Roderick shrugs off coastal winds, dry spells, and poor soils once established. It’s hardy to around -15°C, making it well-suited to most UK gardens, even those prone to the odd harsh winter. We’ve been impressed by its resilience every season, returning year after year with little fuss.

It’s also a magnet for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, making it a fantastic choice for wildlife gardens. We love watching insects gather on its blooms during sunny afternoons - it really brings a garden to life.

Best of all, it asks very little in return. Just plant in a sunny spot with well-drained soil, deadhead occasionally to encourage even more blooms, and give it a light trim in autumn or early spring. That’s about it! Every summer, you’ll be rewarded with clouds of cheerful daisies that seem to glow in the late light.

Pair it with lavender, salvias, or silvery foliage for a relaxed, coastal feel - or use it alongside grasses and other drought-tolerant plants for a naturalistic look. In smaller spaces, it’s a dream for pots and troughs, bringing colour and pollinator appeal without taking over.

Whether you’re designing a sunny border, softening a gravel path, or simply looking for a perennial that looks good without demanding attention, Erigeron x ‘Wayne Roderick’ fits the bill. It’s one of those quiet garden heroes - reliable, beautiful, and full of charm.
